BOMMA: Handblown Glass Lighting in La Jolla

Why We Love BOMMA
BOMMA is another family-owned company. You’ll notice that’s a pattern with the brands we chose. We believe family-owned businesses care more about the product and the company than they do about the bottom line. That shows in the craft.
BOMMA is a lighting company based in the Czech Republic. All of their glass is hand-blown, by actual artists who blow the glass every day, either freehand or into molds depending on the collection, and then finish every piece by hand. Nothing is mass-produced.
What makes them stand out is that they’ve taken this centuries-old glassblowing tradition and applied it to very modern, clean shapes. The result is lighting that feels warm and handmade but looks completely contemporary. Every piece is one of a kind in a subtle way. Even two pieces from the same mold will still be slightly different, because that’s what handcraft does.
They have two types of collections: individual statement pieces and what they call constellations, smaller objects designed to be grouped together. A constellation can be three pieces or twenty, arranged at the same height or cascading down a stairwell. The flexibility is remarkable.
Products We Love Right Now
Dewdrop
This is one of BOMMA’s most iconic pieces and we have it in the showroom. The concept is water droplets on a blade of grass. The structure is a metal band covered in leather with glass drops that look like dewdrops on it. Available with multiple strands at different lengths, a ceiling version, and a floor lamp. They also do a vegan version with a black alternative strap. It’s the kind of piece that’s impossible to walk past.
Tim
Tim was originally a collaboration with Tim Burton. BOMMA created glass coverings for a museum project he was working on, and the lighting grew out of that. It looks like an oversized handblown light bulb, which is very on brand for Tim Burton. What most people don’t know is that each Tim light takes six glassblowers to make. We went to the factory and watched them create it. Every single one is done individually and slightly different. You can mix smoked, clear, and cream glass. We have Tim in the showroom.
Fragments
Fragments is BOMMA’s newest constellation collection, and it’s also their most sustainable one. It uses the byproduct of all their other glass production, the scraps, the ground-off pieces, the material that falls to the floor. Each piece is completely unique because it uses actual glass scraps. The linear version can be controlled via an app, so you can adjust the light level from your phone. Perfect over a dining table or in a conference room.

How We Use BOMMA in Projects
BOMMA works best where lighting needs to do real design work. Sometimes that’s a dramatic pendant above a dining table. Sometimes it’s a custom constellation installation in a double-height entry. We layer BOMMA statement pieces with Studio M and ET2 for a complete lighting plan.
